LECTURES

 Week 1:

  1. Following instructions, the module, course organisation system, access to notes, lecture videos, and summary of tasks 1-3 were briefly discussed. Add/delete modules according to Ms. Ye's request. Visual communication requires commitment and proper implementation of design and planning to convey the right message to the target audience. It is important to understand and apply design concepts and principles.

2.Review the design principles listed below
  • Gestalt Theory: The human brain has an innate ability to recognise patterns, logic and structure. The word "gestalt" comes from German and means "shape" or "form".

  • Contrast: Contrast involves placing distinct elements next to each other for comparison.

  • Emphasis: Emphasis is used during the design process to create emphasis and focus. It is a design method that aims to highlight specific elements.

  • Balance: Balance in design is about the even distribution of visual weight. It is the visual balance of elements that ensures the harmony of the image.

  • Repetition: In design, repetition creates rhythm and regularity, giving the work a sense of movement. Additionally, variety is essential to maintain the excitement and energy of the rhythm and prevent monotony.

  • Movement: In visual imagery, motion or movement refers to the path the design guides the viewer’s eye within, around, and through the composition—the trajectory that the eye follows. The effect of objects appearing to move is achieved through the use of shapes, forms, lines and curves.

  • Harmony and Unity: In design, harmony means picking elements that have similar qualities. This ensures that they fit well with each other and are consistent with the same theme, aesthetic style or emotional tone.
  • Symbol: A symbol is a mark, form, or entity used to represent something else. It can convey information equivalent to one or more written sentences or even a complete story.

  • Word and Images: In graphic or digital design, images play a key role. It enables users to connect with a specific concept or brand. Carefully choosing the right word and typefaces can enhance the deeper meaning of your design.

3.Choose the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

Based on the instructions provided by Ms. Ye on the briefing day, I conducted some research and identified the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) that I decided to delve deeper into.

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal I chose is Goal 14, which is “Marine Life”.

  • The ocean covers nearly four-thirds of the earth's surface and accounts for 97% of the earth's total water resources.
  • More than three billion people rely on a variety of seabed and coastal organisms for their livelihoods.
  • The industrial chain value of seabed and coastal resources has been estimated to reach three trillion US dollars per year, accounting for approximately 5% of global GDP.
  • About 200,000 species of seabed organisms have been discovered so far, and the actual number may reach tens of millions.
  • The seabed absorbs about 30% of the carbon dioxide produced by human activities, helping to slow global warming.
  • The seabed contains the world's largest protein resource, providing the protein needs of more than three billion people.
  • Seabed fisheries employ more than 200 million people directly or indirectly.
  • Fishing subsidies threaten the extinction of many fish species and have a negative impact on the revitalisation of global fisheries and related jobs, leading to an expected annual loss of up to $50 billion in seabed fishery production.
  • International Waters sites show that seawater acidification levels have increased by 26% since the first industrial revolution.
  • Water quality in coastal areas is gradually deteriorating due to the effects of pollution and eutrophication.

     4.Select design work

Choose existing art/design pieces concurred around your chosen goals. Below the image, include a line of acknowledgment of the art/design work (title of the art/design work, artist/designer's name, year, size, medium, link to source).

Title:origin sea
Designer: Melani Pyke
Size: 564x869 pixels
Medium: Original art oil/acrylic painting

5.Explanation of Selected Design Work In approximately 100-150 words, explain why you chose this design in relation to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and list the design principles you observed in the design.

I chose this design because this image ties in closely with the United Nations' "Clean Water and Sanitation" goals, emphasising the importance of water. Simplicity in the design principles is reflected in the clarity and intuitiveness of the imagery, while symbolism is reflected in the interaction of hands and water, symbolising humanity's harmonious relationship with nature. Emotional resonance is through the observer's emotional response to the falling water droplets, triggering thoughts about cherishing water resources.

In addition, contrast, balance and repetition are core elements of image design, such as the contrast between hands and water, the up and down positions of hands in the picture, and the repeated falling of water droplets, which all enhance the visual impact and information transmission effect of the image.
